Stories
Unsolved mysteries · historical disasters · shipwrecks · heists · lost cities · forgotten inventors · strange laws · survival stories · famous hoaxes · ghost towns.
Make it yours: pick an era or a place and become the channel for it.
Facts and explainers
Deep sea creatures · space · the human body · psychology effects · how things are made · animal behaviour · weather extremes · words and their origins · maps and borders · food history.
Make it yours: one surprising fact per video, explained properly rather than listed.
Ideas and motivation
Stoic philosophy · habits · famous speeches · quotes explained · money mistakes · learning techniques · sleep · focus · minimalism · decision-making.
Make it yours: a consistent voice and a clear opinion. Motivation channels that only read quotes are the kind YouTube now treats as repetitive.
Local and niche
Your town's history · a sports club's legends · a hobby (fishing, chess, watches, trains) · a language's quirks · a region's food · old adverts · retro games · a single author's books · architecture · walking routes.
Make it yours: these are small audiences, but loyal ones, with little competition.
Niches to be careful with
Money, health and legal advice: YouTube is strict about AI personas posing as experts in these, and getting facts wrong can hurt people.
Celebrity gossip and real people: easy to slip into defamation or deepfakes.
Reuploaded clips from films, TV or other creators: copyright claims and no monetisation.
How to test a niche before committing
Make ten videos on it, a few days apart, and compare them with ten on a second idea. Look at how many viewers stayed rather than swiped, and how many subscribed. The numbers usually show a clear winner.
Search the niche on YouTube and TikTok. Plenty of small channels doing well means there's demand. Only huge channels doing well can mean it's hard to break in. Nobody at all may mean nobody's looking.
Combining niches
Some of the best channels sit where two niches meet: the history of food, the science of sport, the psychology of money, mysteries at sea. The overlap is less crowded, and the angle gives the channel its personality.
Write your channel in one line: "[topic] for people who [like something]". If you can't, the channel probably isn't focused enough yet.
Questions
Is it too late to start a faceless channel?
No, but generic ones struggle. A specific niche with a recognisable voice still grows.
